Kanon offers three distinct places to stay, all set within a private nature reserve on the Garden Route:

Most popular Garden Route towns are beautiful but busy — especially during peak season. Kanon is deliberately different. It’s a private nature reserve, which means limited guests, no day visitors, and no noise. You’re not sharing a beach with hundreds of people. You’re on your own stretch of unspoilt coastline, with fynbos, wildlife, and silence. It’s the Garden Route without the chaos.
Yes. The self-catering houses and beach cottages at Kanon are well suited to families. Children can roam freely and safely within the private reserve, and the beach is calm and uncrowded – a world away from the packed beaches of peak-season Plettenberg Bay or Mossel Bay town.

Kanon is a year-round destination. Summer (November–February) is warm and ideal for beach days. Spring and autumn offer mild weather, fewer visitors, and a more tranquil experience. Even in peak season, Kanon feels quieter than the rest of the Garden Route because of its private nature reserve status. December and Easter book up fast – reserve early.

We have a “No Pets” policy at Kanon Private Nature Reserve, owing to the wealth of antelope/buck species, birds, tortoises and the possibility of snakes.
Yes well sell bags of ice, please enquire ahead of time, subject to availability during peak season.
Yes we do sell firewood. We stock Rooikrans (also known as Rooipitjie) and Namibian Firewood subject to availability.

We do have wifi in the accommodation dwellings.
Yes. Kanon offers 3.2 km of private, undisturbed coastline with direct beach access from all accommodation. It is one of the few photography destinations on the Garden Route where you can shoot sunrise, seascape, wildlife, and landscape all from a single base without crowds or time constraints.
Check in times are from 14:00pm to 18:00pm (no later, you do not want to miss the sunset!)

Yes. The waters off Kanon fall within the Gouritz Eastern Coastal Corridor. Southern Right Whales are regularly spotted from the beach between June and November, often close enough for shore-based wildlife photography. Dolphins are present year-round.
All seasons offer strong landscape photography conditions at Kanon. Winter (June-August) delivers dramatic light and storm seas. Spring (September–October) brings migratory birds and fynbos blooms. Summer mornings have long golden hours. Autumn gives calm seas and exceptional light quality.

Yes. All accommodation at Kanon is self-catering, allowing photographers to set their own schedule around sunrise and sunset sessions. Photography accommodation on the Garden Route doesn’t get more flexible, or more immersive, than waking up metres from the Indian Ocean.
Regular species include African Black Oystercatcher, Cape Cormorant, Swift Tern, Kelp Gull, and seasonal African Penguin sightings. The protected fynbos habitat also supports over 100 bird species, making bird photography on the Garden Route a significant draw for visiting photographers.
There is no shop at Kanon, we do however sell bags of ice and firewood.
The closest shops are at Gouritz or Vleesbaai who have limited groceries. It is best to prepare and shop for your days from larger towns such as Mossel Bay which is roughly 30 minutes drive from Kanon.

If a public holiday falls during my approved June leave, does it count as a leave day?
No, it doesn’t. Under South African labour law, public holidays (like Youth Day on 16 June) cannot be deducted from your annual leave balance if they fall on a day you would normally work. For example, if you take off a full five-day workweek that includes 16 June, your boss can only deduct four days from your leave cycle. You essentially get that day back.
Not unless you previously agreed to it. Working on any public holiday in South Africa is completely voluntary and must be based on a mutual agreement, usually outlined in your employment contract. If you do agree to work on June 16th, the law states you must be paid double your standard daily rate. If the business closes and you stay home, you still get your usual full pay for that day.

The summer holiday runs from late December 2025 into mid-January 2026, autumn holidays fall around late March to mid-April (overlapping with Easter public holidays), the winter school holiday is in late June to mid-July, and the spring break is in late September to early October. Final dates are confirmed by the Department of Basic Education.

- If cancelling 7 days before arrival, forfeit 100% of the booking total
- If cancelling 21 days before arrival, forfeit 50% of the deposit
- If cancelling 30 days before arrival, forfeit 25% of the deposit
All units are let “Self-Catering” Self-Catering means, guests are expected to bring with and provide their own food and drink. Management can however arrange for catered meals at Periwinkel and/or Khoekhoen by prior arrangement.
There are open braai facilities/bomas and Weber style Kettles at each venue that are suitable for general fires, potjie cooking &braaing. However as KPNR is in a HIGH FIRE RISK ZONE it is essential that due care be taken at all times and all fires “damped down” after use. Potjie pots, braai grids and tongs etc are included at each venue.
The Management of KPNR bears no responsibility for loadshedding but may assist with generator power where deemed appropriate for a limited period of time. This is offered primarily to assist with lights, fridge/freezers and to enable showering and the flushing of toilets etc. No Power means No Shower as all water is pumped into the units from outside tanks to bathrooms etc. The use of electrical appliances should be limited so as not to overload the generator.
Yes, drinking water is supplied at each venue and replenished upon request. The tap water is perfect for cooking, showering etc but has a slightly brackish taste if used for drinking.
All linen is supplied along with bath towels. Beach towels not supplied with the exception of KBL. Electric blankets are supplied in winter along with additional blankets.
Yes, which is available on an “ad hoc” system with the exception of KBL for +/- 90 minutes per day. Rate upon request.
KPNR has a laundry Service which is based upon weight per kilogram. Rates upon request for a “Wash & Fold “ or a “Wash, Fold & Iron” service.
Kanon is remotely located. As your stay is self-catered we recommend that guests bring all their grocery and beverage requirements with them. There are no shopping facilities within 40 minutes /50km of The Reserve.
Visitors are strongly advised to do your shopping before you depart for Kanon, unless prior catering arrangements have been made and paid in advance. The same is applicable to restaurants & takeaway outlets.
We do however offer additional firewood, ice and firelighters subject to availability.

Yes all units are connected to WIFI, have TV’s with DSTV decoders (including sport, news, drama, cartoon & documentary/travel channels etc + Kyknetchannels).
The kitchens and units are exceptionally well equipped and all have “coffee plungers” as a minimum – further details on request
Yes, fishing is allowed, in fact we are a very popular fishing destination! Ensure you you have a current license and follow the do’s & don’ts. We are a very popular self catering accommodation fishing destination in the Western Cape.
