What types of accommodation does Kanon Private Nature Reserve offer?2026-02-27T05:26:03+02:00

Kanon offers three distinct places to stay, all set within a private nature reserve on the Garden Route:

  • Glamping Tents – Luxury camping by the beach. You get the raw beauty of sleeping close to nature without giving up comfort. Fall asleep to the sound of the waves right outside your tent.
  • Beach Cottages – Charming self-catering cottages steps from the beach. Private, cosy, and perfectly positioned on one of the most unspoilt stretches of coastline on the Garden Route.
  • Self-Catering Houses – Spacious holiday homes ideal for families or groups. Fully equipped kitchens, room to breathe, and direct access to the reserve and beach.
What makes Kanon different from other places to stay on the Garden Route?2026-02-27T05:26:33+02:00

Most popular Garden Route towns are beautiful but busy — especially during peak season. Kanon is deliberately different. It’s a private nature reserve, which means limited guests, no day visitors, and no noise. You’re not sharing a beach with hundreds of people. You’re on your own stretch of unspoilt coastline, with fynbos, wildlife, and silence. It’s the Garden Route without the chaos.

Is Kanon suitable for families?2026-02-27T05:27:03+02:00

Yes. The self-catering houses and beach cottages at Kanon are well suited to families. Children can roam freely and safely within the private reserve, and the beach is calm and uncrowded – a world away from the packed beaches of peak-season Plettenberg Bay or Mossel Bay town.

What is glamping at Kanon like?2026-07-10T05:17:39+02:00

Glamping at Kanon means you’re staying in a luxury tent right by the beach on a private nature reserve. It combines the experience of being in nature – open skies, sea air, birdsong – with real comfort and style. It’s one of the most unique places to stay on the Garden Route, and ideal for couples or anyone wanting something more memorable than a standard hotel or guesthouse.

What are the beaches like at Kanon?2026-02-27T05:28:12+02:00

The beaches at Kanon are unspoilt and private. Because Kanon is a nature reserve with limited accommodation, the beach never gets crowded. The coastline is raw and natural – no beach vendors, no loud music, no parking lots. Just clean sand, the Indian Ocean, and peace and quiet. It’s exactly what most people picture when they dream of the Garden Route.

Is Kanon self-catering accommodation?2026-02-27T05:28:41+02:00

Yes. All accommodation at Kanon – the beach cottages and self-catering houses – comes fully equipped so you can cook your own meals. This gives you complete flexibility and privacy. The glamping tents also have their own catering setup. Self-catering is one of the most popular ways to stay on the Garden Route, especially for families and international visitors who prefer the comfort of their own space.

Is Kanon suitable for international tourists visiting the Garden Route?2026-02-27T05:30:12+02:00

April Holidays in South Africa – Best Dates To Book Leave2026-06-18T12:45:09+02:00

View our April Holidays Calendar to find out which April holidays dates are best suited to book leave for 2026, 2027, 2028, 2029, 2030

Why Do South African April Holiday Dates Shift Every Year?

Unlike fixed annual observances like Heritage Day or Christmas, the layout of the April holiday calendar in South Africa is highly fluid. Planning your leave effectively requires understanding why these dates change from one year to the next. This shifts due to two main logistical factors:

  • The Easter Moon Cycle:
The entire Easter long weekend (Good Friday and Family Day) revolves entirely around the lunar cycle rather than the solar calendar. Easter is traditionally observed on the very first Sunday following the full moon that arrives on or after the vernal equinox (21 March). Consequently, Good Friday can fluctuate wildly over a multi-week window, landing anywhere between late March and late April. Because Easter serves as the anchor for autumn getaway planning, its shifting nature completely alters how close it sits to South Africa’s other fixed autumn holidays.
  • The Public Holidays Act Framework:
South Africa implements a strict legal buffer to protect resting periods via the Public Holidays Act (Act 36 of 1994). This law dictates that whenever a statutory public holiday lands on a Sunday, the immediate following Monday becomes an official paid day off. Furthermore, school terms – managed by the Department of Basic Education – regularly adjust their start and end dates to prevent school holiday windows from splitting or overlapping awkward mid-week gaps. This means your operational planning strategy changes completely depending on which days of the week Freedom Day and Worker’s Day land on.

Which official public holidays always occur during April in South Africa?2026-06-18T12:46:25+02:00

South Africa consistently recognizes several major national holidays throughout April. Freedom Day is universally celebrated on the 27th of April to commemorate our first democratic elections. Additionally, the Easter long weekend – comprising Good Friday and Family Day (Easter Monday) – frequently claims a massive stake in the April calendar, though its specific timing varies depending on the global lunar cycle.

How do I use the April public holidays to save my annual leave days?2026-06-18T12:47:27+02:00

You can easily secure an extended autumn break without using up your leave balance by strategic booking. Because Freedom Day (27 April) sits immediately adjacent to Workers’ Day (1 May), you can bridge the gap between them.

By targeting the specific mid-week days separating these dates with just 3 or 4 days of approved annual leave, you can unlock an uninterrupted 9 to 10-day vacation window. You can map out your exact time-off schedule using our dedicated online Leave Date Cheat Sheet.

How do shifting Easter dates impact South African school holiday terms?2026-06-18T12:49:28+02:00

The Department of Basic Education structures school terms to maximize natural holiday breaks. When Easter falls early in the month, the first term school holidays are generally scheduled to wrap around the long weekend, keeping families free to travel together.

If Easter falls very late in April, school terms may remain open through early April but build out an extended closure toward the end of the month, overlapping directly with Freedom Day.

View our April holidays Calendar to find out which April Holiday Dates are best suited for you to maximise your leave days – check out our holiday Leave Cheat Sheet for guidance on this.

What happens if an April public holiday falls on a weekend?2026-06-18T12:50:13+02:00

Under South African labor and constitutional law, when any public holiday falls squarely on a Sunday, the following Monday is designated as an official public holiday.

This gives working citizens a guaranteed long weekend. However, if a public holiday lands on a Saturday, it remains on that Saturday, and no additional weekdays are given off as compensation.

When should I book accommodation for an April holiday trip?2026-06-18T12:52:08+02:00

Due to the combination of pleasant autumn weather and overlapping school breaks, April is one of the most competitive travel windows in South Africa.

Coastal getaways, especially spots along the Garden Route or within nature reserves like Kanon Private nature Reserve, routinely book out 3 to 6 months in advance. Securing your self-catering beach cottage or luxury glamping by the sea setup early – is highly recommended to beat the seasonal rush.

How is my annual leave calculated if I take time off during the June public holiday?2026-06-22T06:53:53+02:00

If a public holiday falls during my approved June leave, does it count as a leave day?

No, it doesn’t. Under South African labour law, public holidays (like Youth Day on 16 June) cannot be deducted from your annual leave balance if they fall on a day you would normally work. For example, if you take off a full five-day workweek that includes 16 June, your boss can only deduct four days from your leave cycle. You essentially get that day back.

Can my boss force me to work on Youth Day (16 June)?2026-06-22T06:57:20+02:00

Not unless you previously agreed to it. Working on any public holiday in South Africa is completely voluntary and must be based on a mutual agreement, usually outlined in your employment contract. If you do agree to work on June 16th, the law states you must be paid double your standard daily rate. If the business closes and you stay home, you still get your usual full pay for that day.
