The Kanon cottage many of our guests have never seen
If you’ve stayed with us at Kanon before, there’s a good chance you walked right past it. Fynbos Beach Cottage sits quietly among the coastal bush at Cape Vacca, and plenty of returning guests tell us they had no idea it was there.
It’s been fully refurbished, it sleeps six, and it has something no other cottage on the reserve has: its own plunge pool, sunk right into the wooden deck. If you’re looking for self-catering accommodation on the Garden Route that feels a little more private, this is the one to know about.
A plunge pool built into the deck
The pool is the first thing people fall for. It’s set flush into the timber deck, so you step out of the lounge and straight into cool water with the sea in front of you.
On a hot Garden Route afternoon it’s where you’ll end up. Early mornings are good too, with a coffee on the edge while the light comes up over the water. Fynbos is the only cottage at Kanon with a plunge pool, which is a big part of why we call it our little secret.
Ocean on one side, Outeniqua Mountains on the other
The deck wraps around about 75% of the house, so you get a different view depending on where you pull up a chair. Look one way and it’s open ocean. Turn around and the Outeniqua Mountains line the horizon.
In between is the fynbos the cottage is named after, full of birds and wildflowers depending on the season. There’s no neighbour noise and no traffic. Just wind, tides and a lot of sky.

Inside Fynbos Beach Cottage
You walk in through double doors into a new kitchen in petrol blue with white stone countertops. Those doors open onto the fynbos side of the deck, so cooking never feels shut away from the view.
From the dining table you look straight through the lounge to treble stacking doors. Slide them open and the living area runs onto the deck and a wide staircase down towards the ocean.
There are three bedrooms and three bathrooms, each with a shower. Two of the bedrooms are en-suite, and the third uses a new bathroom just across the passage. The kitchen has everything you need for a proper self-catering stay, including a dishwasher, coffee machine, oven, stove, microwave, fridge and freezer.
Outside you’ve got the plunge pool, the wraparound deck, a braai and an outdoor dining table. You’ll also find WiFi, a TV, partial solar, fans for summer, heaters for winter and free secure parking. Laundry and housekeeping are available at an extra charge, and you can order firewood, charcoal, ice and even fresh oysters.
Days on the reserve
Kanon Private Nature Reserve is at Cape Vacca, about 42 km from Mossel Bay on the Cape South Coast. The cottage has direct access to an unspoilt beach, so most days start and end with a walk on the sand.
Between swims you can fish off the rocks, go birding in the fynbos, ride the mountain bike trails or run the quiet country roads. Photographers love the light here. Plenty of guests do none of it and simply sit on the deck watching the sea, which is fine by us.
At night, light the braai, eat outside and listen to the waves. It’s about as far from city noise as you can get on the Garden Route.
