Under South African labor and constitutional law, when any public holiday falls squarely on a Sunday, the following Monday is designated as an official public holiday.
This gives working citizens a guaranteed long weekend. However, if a public holiday lands on a Saturday, it remains on that Saturday, and no additional weekdays are given off as compensation.
