As part of the broader Gouritz region, Kanon Private Nature Reserve is connected to one of the most ecologically valuable areas on the planet. The Gouritz Cluster Biosphere Reserve (GCBR) oversees conservation, research, and community-centred projects across this UNESCO-recognised landscape. In this introductory post, we unpack what makes the GCBR so special and why their work – especially ecological corridors and biodiversity islands – matters for both wilderness areas and human communities.
Who is the GCBR:
The Gouritz Cluster Biosphere Reserve NPC (GCBR) is an action-oriented non-profit organisation founded in 2011, and based in Riversdale. We drive programmes and catalyse initiatives that nurture resilience in nature and communities within the 3.2-million-hectare area that has been designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. This area is located across large portions of the Southern and Western Cape of South Africa. The Gouritz Cluster Biosphere Reserve (Gouritz Region) is an incredibly unique in that it is the only area in the world where three biodiversity hotspots converge i.e. The Cape Floristic Region, Succulent Karoo and Maputaland-Pondoland-Albany Hotspot. This has resulted in rich biodiversity with a high level of endemism recognising the region as a global treasure.

One of GCBR’s flagship programmes is Gouritz Ecological Corridors, this initiative aims to enhance the ecological function and improve natural resource management at landscape-scale by coordinating conservation activities and collaborating directly with landowners. This work includes supporting landowners with information, advice and practical management recommendations ranging from biodiversity conservation to regenerative farming, enabling them to become stewards, within the context of their property and land use activities. This initiative also aims to collaborate with relevant stakeholders to create Biodiversity Islands within urban areas, which will allow for movement of birds, insects, plants and more.
What are Ecological Corridors and Biodiversity Islands?
An area of land (natural vegetation) or water (rivers) that connects isolated habitats allowing species to move and natural processes to flow freely across the landscape. They are established by promoting key conservation activities such as clearing of invasive alien species, soil conservation, wetland and river restoration.
We’ll continue to share more of GCBR’s inspiring work – including recent plant, bird and insect identifications recorded at Kanon — on our website, and you can view all the species observations to date on iNaturalist:
